CARLY RAE JEPSEN – CALL ME MAYBE

April 2012

Weeks on chart: 39+

Peak position:  1

One of only two million sellers in 2012, and there are going to be a whole host of “music snobs” out there deriding this selection being on this list at all, never mind being so high on it, but let’s get this straight…….”Pop” songs produced at their finest are the most important part of the UK charts and have been since its 1952 beginning.  The Beatles wrote great pop songs, Madonna & Michael Jackson were the biggest artists in the world, and what makes every girl dance around her hand-bag isn’t  a supremely cool R ‘n’ B tune, its’s a brilliantly executed “Pop” record……And this my friends is most definitely one that falls into that category.  Tantalizing synth melody hook (CHECK!), catchy sing-along chorus (CHECK!), bubblegum teen lyrics (CHECK!)………My argument is complete 😉

AZEALIA BANKS – 212

January 2012

Weeks on chart: 35

Peak position:  12

The New Yorker began the year by coming third in the BBC’s sound of 2012 poll and then released this absolute monster of a tune.  Amazing to think that after sticking around for the best part of nine months, it still never managed to break the top 10!  It’s so unique that I dunno where to begin with a description, so all I’ll say is……Video of the year (I can’t take my eyes off her! just mesmerizing) , and what a stunner!  Sit back and enjoy….

NE-YO – LET ME LOVE YOU (UNTIL YOU LEARN TO LOVE YOURSELF)

September 2012

Weeks on chart: 15

Peak position:  1

One of the most consistent artists of the past decade, Ne-Yo is not only a brilliant song writer, but a fantastic stage performer and vocalist.  This track draws you in instantly with the melodic piano chords and although featuring a “Guetta-esque” euro-beat, it never falls into the trap of sounding like a cheesy house song.  The best bit about this track, though, is Ne-Yo’s superb staggered delivery of each verse.  Only a natural performer could have the imagination to do it that way.  By the way, this was co-written with the aforementioned Sia Furler of “Wild Ones” & “Titanium” fame……Awesome 2012 for her!

PLAN B – ILL MANORS

April 2012

Weeks on chart: 16

Peak position:  6

Second entry for Plan B in what has been another stand-out year for the multi-talented artist.  After the success of “Strickland Banks”, it would have been easy for Ben Drew to fall into the comfort zone of producing another soul record, but he ripped up the formula and wrote and produced not only a critically-acclaimed film, but also a top class album by the same name.  Writing in The Independent, Tim Walker called this title track “an all-time great protest song” & one MP compared it to Marvin Gaye’s classic, “What’s Going On”.  This guy will be around for the long-term.

ANGEL – WONDERFUL

July 2012

Weeks on chart: 13

Peak position:  9

25 year old Angel from West London had tasted chart success from behind the scenes after co-writing Roll Deep’s 2010 number 1, “Green Light”.  But the two tracks released either side of “Wonderful” just failed to make the top 40 so he may have to live off the brief mainstream success of this very cool summer hit.  A real blend of breakbeat/garage, R& B & rock, it mashed all the elements together to crack my top ten.

PUBLIC ENEMY – HARDER THAN YOU THINK

July 2012

Weeks on chart: 14

Peak position:  4

It’s quite astonishing that it has taken TWENTY FIVE YEARS for Chuck D & Flavor Flav & the crew to finally break the UK top ten!  The kings of the classic sample hook struck gold again with this tune by going full circle and actually sampling their first release, the 1987 hit, “Public Enemy No.1”.  But the real magic is that recurring horn sample hook which kicks in on 42 seconds, taken from the 40 year old “Jezahel” track by Shirley Bassey.  Originally released for Public Enemy’s 20th anniversary in 2007, “Harder Than You Think” finally got the success it deserved after Channel 4 used it as the theme for their Paralympics coverage.

OF MONSTERS AND MEN – LITTLE TALKS

August 2012

Weeks on chart: 20+

Peak position:  12

As often happens, some tunes that deserve a number 1 standing seem to collect that award on the Irish charts, but not in the UK.  This was one of those tunes, and it couldn’t even break the top 10 in the UK.  Hailing from Iceland, they will be one of the ones to watch next year.  A nice upbeat song with that boy/girl vocal mix which almost always grabs me.

PLAN B – DEEPEST SHAME

September 2012

Weeks on chart: 4

Peak position:  27

The first of two entries for Ben Drew, otherwise known as Plan B.  This guy is just supremely talented and both tracks on this chart came from the self written & directed film “Ill Manors”.  A man whose rapping is on a par with his stunning voice.

AVICII – SILHOUETTES

May 2012

Weeks on chart: 20

Peak position:  22

Pure TUUUUUUUUNAGE!!!  It’s just as well that Swedish House Mafia are retiring because the heir to their crown is here to stay in Avicii.  After already having hits with “Seek Bromance” & “Levels”, the 23 year old came third in DJ magazine’s top 100 of 2012 and then had this relatively less successful single out in May.  It mixes house synths with one of THE vocal performances of the year, coming from another Swede, Salem Al Fakir.  A proper fusion of modern house but with a real old skool 90’s vibe.  Love it!

LABRINTH – EXPRESS YOURSELF

May 2012

Weeks on chart: 17

Peak position:  12

So ever since his first release, “Let The Sunshine”, I’ve been excited about Labrinth the artist rather than just Labrinth, the genius producer, and 2012 has just proved I was right to hold those expectations.  “Earthquake” was a huge tune, but this follow up was even better.  Sampling Charles Wright & the Watts 103 Street Rhythm Band’s 1971 song (which also provided the sample to NWA’s classic 1989 tune), he shows off his aforementioned production skills and casually strolls through the vocals.  Not the last we’ll be seeing of Lab on this chart by the way.
