PUBLIC ENEMY – HARDER THAN YOU THINK

July 2012

Weeks on chart: 14

Peak position:  4

It’s quite astonishing that it has taken TWENTY FIVE YEARS for Chuck D & Flavor Flav & the crew to finally break the UK top ten!  The kings of the classic sample hook struck gold again with this tune by going full circle and actually sampling their first release, the 1987 hit, “Public Enemy No.1”.  But the real magic is that recurring horn sample hook which kicks in on 42 seconds, taken from the 40 year old “Jezahel” track by Shirley Bassey.  Originally released for Public Enemy’s 20th anniversary in 2007, “Harder Than You Think” finally got the success it deserved after Channel 4 used it as the theme for their Paralympics coverage.
