If you are gonna cover an absolute classic than you had better do a damn good job of it! Where Gabrielle Aplin’s cover of Frankie Goes To Hollywood’s “The Power Of Love” was decent enough and went on to top the charts….Paloma’s take on “Never Tear Us Apart” by INXS was a much better in my opinion. Didn’t mess to much with the original, and her vocal is perfectly suited.
Sandé’s gospel-tinged hit was her first big assault on the singles chart in what was an unforgettable 2012 for her as appearances in both the opening and closing ceromonies of the Olympics turned her into a huge artist. Behind Nicki Minaj’s “Starships, this was the biggest selling single NOT to top the charts.
The kid from Fair City pissed off “The Voice” of Ireland by appearing on “Britain’s Got Talent” and went on to melt every female heart with this self-penned love song.
As I have to use a blog for work purposes, I’ve decide to get some practice in by writing on something on which I at least know a little about….Music, and the UK charts in particular. So of the 365 tracks which have entered the UK top 40 single chart this year, here is my own personal “Top 40” of 2012. Feel free to leave your comments whether or not you agree….But my opinion is obviously the only one that matters….I am the LIVING LEGEND after all! 😉
Rules are simple…..All songs must have been original 2012 releases and have entered the Official UK top 40.
For example, this means I have omitted tunes which had 2012 chart success such as “Wonderwall” from Oasis & Elbow’s “One Day Like This” as they are not an original 2012 releases, and even a couple of big tunes such as “Rolling In The Deep” by Adele, & “We Found Love” by Rihanna ft Calvin Harris as both were original releases in 2011.
Honourable mentions go to Blur’s comeback “Under The Westway”, The Vaccines’ “Teenage Icon”, Sub Focus’ “Tidal Wave”, Naughty Boy ft Emeli Sandé “Wonder”, Otto Knows “Million Voices”, Chris Brown’s “Don’t Wake Me Up” & “Cough Cough” from Everything Everything which all just fell short of my final 40……….And also songs which unbelievably didn’t even chart such as, Lykke Li with “I Follow Rivers” & the brilliant Frank Ocean, whose excellent album “Channel Orange” produced the single, “Thinking About You” which staggeringly didn’t even make a dent on the top 100!
36 different tracks officially topped the UK chart in 2012, and 13 of them feature in my list.
I’ll accompany each track with a comparable song from years gone by…..cos I’m good like that!……..Right let’s kick things off with number 40…..
