LABRINTH FT EMELI SANDÉ – BENEATH YOUR BEAUTIFUL

October 2012

Weeks on chart: 12+

Peak position:  1

It’s not very often that I love a song instantly upon hearing it.  This was one of those exceptions.  I remember Dermot O’Leary mentioning Labrinth coming up after the break on X-Factor and not really having much excitement.  Don’t get me wrong, I’m a big fan of Lab, but I was not expecting to see him sat down in front of a piano chiming a beautiful set of opening chords.  Gary Barlow was sitting in the judges chair probably wishing he had written it.  I was hooked right there and then as he sang the haunting first verse all the way up to the first “Would you let me…..” (56 secs in), where out of nowhere he seems to be channelling the great Ray Charles.  A vocal master class only aided by the gorgeous voice of Emeli Sandé once the thumping bass kicks in.  An epic duet all the way through with Emeli hitting the pitch perfect “See beneath your beautiful…” (3.55), and the two of them ‘Taking it home’ as they say before Lab ends on those wonderful final chords.  A worthy song to top any years chart.
